Safer Georgia Roads For The 4th of July

Visitors to Jekyll Island over the 4th should think twice before speeding. The Georgia State Patrol will be fully staffed, monitoring the roads for unsafe drivers. This week county and state police are, and will be, patrolling Georgia’s beaches and highways in force for the coming Independence Day celebration.

“It’s the largest operation we have on an annual basis,” Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said. “There are more officers on patrol the Fourth of July than any other day of the year because of the large crowds.”

“We have more calls and problems related to fireworks than any other day of the year, including New Year’s,” he said. “Our officers stay very busy answering calls.”
Doering said police also anticipate a rise in traffic and alcohol offenses.

Public safety is the state law enforcement agency’s primary objective, said Trooper Larry Schnall Sr., GSP spokesperson.

“Last year, 30 people lost their lives while driving on Georgia roads during the Fourth of July holiday,” he said. “Since the holiday is in the middle of the week this year, we’re expecting even more travelers to be on Georgia’s roads. Every available trooper will be on patrol during the holiday period, as well as members of the motor carrier compliance division, which concentrates on commercial vehicle enforcement.”

Protecting Jekyll Island

Earlier this week, Governor Sonny Perdue signed an important bill into law that is intended to help revitalize Jekyll island without the construction of high-end resorts and luxury condos. The Island is currently state owned land and measures have been taken to keep at least 65% of the land protected and out of the hands of private developers.

Many Georgians applaud the governors actions as most feel the beautiful sand and surf of Jekyll Island ought to remain available for EVERYONE to enjoy for generations to come.

Free Dylan!

For two years now the Georgia Aquarium has been the home and caretaker for Dylan, a rescued loggerhead sea turtle. After being displayed for nearly 5 million visitors to the aquarium, Dylan’s time to go has arrived.

Dylan was first found on the Jekyll Island coast as a hatchling straggler left behind by his nest mates. He was the runt. However, after a few years of fine dining on squid, shrimp, and other gourmet ocean treats, the seven-year-old is weighing a solid 140lbs and outgrowing his surroundings. It’s time for him to go.

Loggerhead Sea Turtles are classified as a threatened species along with seven other varieties of sea turtles. Dylan’s return coincides with the beginning of the annual sea turtle nesting season. The first Loggerhead nest of the year was spotten last week on Cumblerland Island.

Dylan is to be released this week from the same Jekyl Island beach on which he was discovered

Dragon Boat Racing

About Dragon Boat Racing ~

Present Day:     *Most dragon boats in the US are 40′ long “canoes”, powered by 20 paddlers seated two to a row, supervised by a drummer while a steerer drives it. Sprint Races usually cover about 500m (1,641′ or 1/3 of a mile = 2-3 minute race). Today’s races and clinic sessions will be in “mini-dragon boats” which seat 10 paddlers, made of fiberglass and wood trim. These minis weigh 440lbs. Dragon Boat races take place round the world from Asia, Europe, North and South America and Africa Read the rest of this entry »
